From Encyclopedia Dramatica
RMT is an acronym standing for "real money transactions" - something that has always existed within the F2P realms of MMORPGs, but now is venturing off into pay-to-play ones.

Blizzard; World of Warcraft
Tying with SOE as the first to add such a controversial feature, Blizzard decided, "Hey, we make an assload of money, why not make some more?" Within the patch files of the latest expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, many leet hackers found a "paid character customization button" - later confirmed by Blizzard that they would add this, and soon did, right after SOE placed their Station Cash in. What shook the MMORPG community was the fact that Blizzard added something that EverQuest II allows for free.
SOE; EverQuest Live and EverQuest II
Soon after The Shadow Odyssey, the fifth expansion to EQ2 released, SOE went all ninja and implemented a "Station Cash" feature that involves buying a special currency with IRL money and spending it on ingame shit. Nobody knows if it was SOE or Blizzard that started this trend.
Square-Enix's next MMORPG
With Final Fantasy XI almost as old as EverQuest, Square looks forward to making their next MMORPG.
The Other Side of the Coin
In these companies' defense, they are business out to make money. Plus, the comparisons of RMT added to these games to the Holocaust makes those who are against the feature look more and more like whiny faggots with each second.
