I am downloading plenty of good material from the POVs of the Christian Right (Exodus Now! Free our children from Public School Faggotry!) and Gay Rights (Larry is our Poster Child! Larry joins Hyacinthus, Cyparissus, Narcissus, etc, as a pretty boy we can cry our faggot eyes out over!)
This Joy Epstein woman intrigues me. How could someone who meant so well have gone so completely wrong? I suspect Liberalism at work.

So now, they promote Larry's teacher Joy Epstein to the position of principal at Sunkist elementary. This is where my son goes to school! I'm going to have to keep a close eye on this gay loving Jew. I want to make sure she doesn't try to inculcate my little boy with some kind of degenerate queer agenda. This whole incident has gone to far. To hell with LGBT people. Your sexuallity belongs in the bedroom. Not in a puplic school. Stay in the closet, we don't want to see your vile behavior.

Although I strongly suspect that the Kings will get a good chunk of money in the lawsuit, I (very sadly and unwillingly) must come down against Larry and his misguided "support team," and FOR Brandon. Someone should have given Larry the opportunity to express his cross-dressing side privately, and given him pointers on how to behave in "public time." Instead, somebody (Joy Epstein!) got intoxicated with the passage of a pro-gay bill, and tried to CHANGE MIDDLE-SCHOOL. THIS CANNOT BE DONE: Middle-school is an atavistic experience, going back before the stone-age. Larry was allowed to engage in repeated sexual harassment, and that should have been stopped. The Right of Free Speech famously does not include the right to shout "Fire!" in a crowded theater. That principle applies to wearing make-up and high-heels to class, and repeatedly trying to contaminate another middle-school boy with your faggotry when he is already struggling to break free from a fucked-up mother, and find some way to be a man.

The language above is "focalized" from Brandon's POV. Because of mood-swings and fragile identities, middle-school is a game of chutes and ladders: quick ascents and quick descents based on a roll of the dice. For Brandon, I suppose, the Nazi / White Supremacist Stuff was meant to be a "ladder," a quick means of ascent to a respectable, inviolable male identity. Contrary-wise, being touched by Larry would have been a "chute," a quick descent back down to square one, where a boy has no male identity at all.
From Larry's point of view, being forced to play the "boy game" (act tough, play at sports to WIN, get in fights and try to kiss girls in order to win status points) would have felt like instant destruction, like putting his hand in a meat-grinder; a quick trip to the very BOTTOM of the male status-hierarchy.
But touching a "fighter" like Brandon, a boy fighting desperately to create and hold onto a male identity, would have felt like finally reaching an island of stability in sea of swirling, feminine, emotional chaos. Indeed, the swirling, colorful chaos of the FAGGOT-TREE is a very good picture of a gay kid's soul. Brandon was "hot," a very desirable Valentine, because he was struggling SO HARD to escape from his mother's drug-fueled emotional chaos, and latch onto the crude symbols of masculinity his family offered: of guns and nazis and "Odin."
This is all the more true, in that NO-ONE in Larry's life had any idea how to offer him a stable point of gender reference. Everyone was ENCOURAGING him to "express" his faggotry. Faggoty boys don't need that; it's like pouring water on a drowning man. But they don't need the Christian Right to slam the door in their faces, either. They need a place where they can talk about what boys they are interested in, and why. If someone intelligent could have been found to help the two communicate, Larry's vulnerability might have brought out something protective in Brandon; Brandon's struggle for manhood might have inspired Larry's fragile male self-image.
Instead, everyone who comments seems on this issue seems to be sold out to one fragmentary ideology or another: either the Macho Faggotry of Orange County's Christian Right, or the Damn-the-torpedos gay-sex-in-kindergarten Gay Rights crowd.
