New Server & New Version of MediaWiki

We just moved to a way faster server and the newest version of MediaWiki software. There are some bugs that our IT department is working on around the clock. Anything that you come across that is broken or acting hinky, please let us know so we can get them fixed asap.

We also have the capacity to add additional features we could not with the old version of MediaWiki and are open to User input to solidify ED as your one-stop-shop for lulz, drama and e-reporting and the best damn site on the Internets.

On this page, Bureaucrats, Sysops and EDiots can cry WOLF!!! and get the 411 on anything that got borked in the move to our new series of tubes and discuss potential new features that might be cool for ED. We also welcome requests, suggestions and constructive comments for make benefit Glorious Nation of ED.

BUGS:GO GO GO!

  • First Bug! - It is not giving an edit section link on this break --ZaigerImage:Lmao.gif talkplx 03:44, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
  • Some of your templates are combining with the text of the articles, syntax errors in the HTML, etc.. A good example is things filed under "elaw" / Internet Law. And here my voice goes to ones and zeros... 23:49, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
URL parser is being a whiny little bitch. For example when going to http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/Donate.html it redirects to this page, which links to donate.html, presumably meaning that you guys are getting no donation money right now. In addition, when going to, for example, How is babby formed? via a direct URL, it gets all fucked up. Zegen 21:50, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
Forwarded to senior administration, thank you very much. --zaigerin ur talk, shakin mah fishtalkplx 21:59, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
Well naturally. When the path of money is blocked, everything should come to a grinding halt until said money is flowing again. And I say this in all seriousness. Thanks for that by the way. Zegen 22:03, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
  • Not really a bug, but I noticed that the upload page is allowing every file type and has the max size set as 2mb, instead of telling people not to upload huge shit. -Larumph Image:Pinkpony.gifmsg 06:39, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

New item - Page view count is missing. - From the lulzdeck, this is Your Captain Speaking You are now free to move about the wiki. 14:21, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

  • My understanding was that in this new version the page view count was hitting the server hard so it is temporarily disabled. If we can find a fix it will be turned back on. WM 14:26, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

New item - Image "Edit this file using an external application" gives a PHP file, not the image file. Pointless bug, since right-click solves all, but figured I'd bring it up. - Your Captain Speaking [LOL TALK] You are now free to move about the wiki. 03:14, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

I can't seem to retrieve my lost password. I only use five (only) emails, I wouldn't have registered with anything else. Even ED says it sent my password to the email on file, but nothing. Tried once yesterday too. It's also possible I'm just retarded but I figured I might as well have you look at it. VaelVictus 02:09, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Hai gaiz

I'm alive again. I fell off of the internets for a few months there because I was getting myself ready to move into a new apartment, but now that I'm moved (or at least -mostly- moved), I'll be able to be a bit more frequent than I have been. My first order of business will be to attack the main page and fix or work around the fact that the collapsing objects and other special shit I put there is now broken. That should happen sometime within the next few days, unless WhiteMystery beats me to it. --Blu Aardvark 01:46, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

  • FIRST. I have nothing worthwhile to say, I just want to exclaim that I was the first to respond to you.

 »»What 01:47, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

  • also: read the sysop list re: the front page.

 »»What 01:48, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

  • Downloading all my gmail into Thunderbird now. All 1000+ messages. I'll follow up on the main page discussion in a bit, after I quickly review whatever I may have missed. --Blu Aardvark 01:56, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
  • tl;dr version: we're thinking up new ways to make the main page dynamic yet different from TOW since we moved to new servers and a new mediawiki.

 »»What 02:05, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

  • Glad to see you back :) Definitely don't want to step on any toes since I know the front page is your baby, but I'm happy to help with any sort of dynamic content we might want. At the very least, we can make the rotation of Moar You Know and Good New Articles easier to use. WM 02:33, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
    • I don't much like the abominable dynamic stuff we have going on for The Moar You Know, to be perfectly honest. It'd work perfectly fine if it was reverted back to a single static template, etc. But I'll want to get a general sysop consensus before I do that. As for good new articles... I agree. That's pretty abominable. I'll see what I can do to consolidate that. As for the rest of the main page, I have an idea in mind. I'll hammer away on it during the next few days or so in my userspace. My desk hasn't been moved yet, and I don't much like computing from the middle of the floor except for essential requirements, so more immediate results are a bit unlikely. --Blu Aardvark 06:01, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

New Collapsing Objects

If you're not on the mailing list, you may have missed that we rolled out a new version of the collapsing objects.

Pros:

  • Easier syntax, less typing
  • One-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-many relationships between links and targets
  • HOLY SHIT COLORS
  • Runs faster in every browser except IE7

Cons:

  • Some things will be broken on site for a while
  • There's a bug in IE7's javascript engine that causes slight lag when

clicking on a link

You can see the full list of changes and instructions at the old project page:

Encyclopedia Dramatica:Collapsing Objects

What can you do to help? Try the new syntax, test the new features, update templates that are currently broken. I'll be starting a page at:

Encyclopedia Dramatica:Collapsing Objects/Templates

to help us keep track of templates that need to be converted over.

Thanks! WM 15:26, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

Deep linking in YouTube Videos

Would it be possible to edit the youtube template to allow us to link to specific times in video links? something along the lines of

abcdefg
I currently cant get it working just by appending #t=1m55s to the end of the video id.

Thanks -Larumph Image:Pinkpony.gifmsg 15:34, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

If it is possible, wouldn't people also wanna use this to load multiple videos? Say the last two minutes of an unrelated military doco as intro to a rant? 0ttre 17:07, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

you can always just put

funny video

which would end up

funny video

Also the time is in xx mins xx secs ftw

Portals...

Are busted. Or at least, some of them.

If I wasn't so tired, I'd probably spend the time to study them and fix them, but as it is, all I can do is delegate that task to somebody else. DO IT FAGGOT. --Blu Aardvark 08:51, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

It seems to be something from Template:Portal. I'm not sure what exactly is wrong or how to fix it, but I have determined that this happened:

MysteryBot Updates

Unlike normal, I would appreciate it if everyone would try their best to confuse and/or break the bot. I just did some major revisions to work with the new MediaWiki version and they don't have the year of testing that the old version did so I'm still a little wary of them. For sysops: rollback+ should be safe to use now, I'm not sure about the insert and replace commands. Ban him if he goes apeshit. WM 04:39, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

New toy

Thanks to WhiteMystery, we now have a template which can be used to make video galleries a helluva lot easier on an article. See fv (or vgallery, if that's easier for you to remember). Examples of usage here and here. The template can handle up to ten videos. --Blu Aardvark 03:44, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Basic Wikimarkup

  • Remember that you can place each piped argument on a newline if you like; that tends to make your code easier to read and understand. --Blu Aardvark 03:44, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Fancy Collapsing Signatures

For an exciting new level in vanity, keep reading. With the new collapsing object code you can now have a collapsing signature that doesn't interfere with any other instances of your signature, assuming you don't sign the same page twice in one edit.

1. Create a subpage in your userspace. For example, User:WhiteMystery/vanity.

2. Put the code into this page and surround the entire thing in includeonly tags. Put a into all instances of collapsing code.

<includeonly>
<span style="font-weight: bold;">W</span>
<span class="wmsig"> talk • contribs </span>
<span style="font-weight: bold;" class="co;M;M;0;wmsig;black"></span>
</includeonly>

Don't space it out like in this example - it all needs to be on one line:

<includeonly><span style="font-weight: bold;">W</span><span class="wmsig"> talk • contribs </span><span style="font-weight: bold;" class="co;M;M;0;wmsig;black"></span></includeonly>

3. Ask a sysop to protect the the signature page when you're done with it.

4. Either on your preferences page or whenever you make a comment, subst the page. For example, .

Results:

W talkcontribs

Click the M, the signature expands out to show talk page and contribs. Click it again and the stuff is hidden.

Enjoy, ask for help if you need it and please post any cool examples you come up with. I'll put five or six of the best on the collapsing objects page as examples. WM 15:55, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Popularpages is gone.

What done happened to Special:Popularpages? Also, the edit section links are appearing on the left instead of the right. • Popularpages was almost certainly killed as a direct result of the Mediawiki upgrade. It was pretty useless anyway, since we disabled pageview counting a long time ago to reduce server load. If you want something somewhat like it, you might check out Special:MostRevisions, which lists the articles that have undergone the most edits since creation. Grawp's massive cock is not dead yet. It's been a year and a half, and they still haven't managed to stop Grawp. Fucking hilarious.--Rape Machine 00:18, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
Also, you should pay more attention to NawlinWiki. His response to Grawp's vandalism makes him the biggest lolcow Wikipedia currently has.--Rape Machine 00:19, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
Ironic that NawlinWiki's a lol-cow, given that he's Indian... don't they worship cows or something over there? Anyway, he seems to have gotten hold of the fact that he should stop responding to Grawp vandalism. A golden age has ended.--Rape Machine 00:24, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
Also, I'm an obvious ByAppointmentTo sock. I don't really even need to let people work it out. I have no particular interest in regularly editing ED anymore, but I'm not gonna do any fucking harm. There's no reason to block me. Sure, you can, but at this point I'm only ever gonna make minor additions to ED, hence blocking me would be unnnecessary, for want of a better word.--Rape Machine 00:28, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
Ask ODB for his opinion. To me, he is the final court of justice on ED.--Rape Machine 00:30, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
Well you should make sure not to make edits like this [1] --Ritegroic 04:14, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
  • lol how many hundreds of thousands of users and those cocksuckers are just barely catching up to ED. It's like the Boy Scouts vs Special Forces. WM 02:22, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
    • I do agree it's barely. A guy makes one small comment [2] of a small ASCII non-color version of goatse to someone's talk page and didn't remove any content. This something that would be completely appropriate on ED, except that the user didn't sign the post (shameful!) and then well the bot either had this ASCII programmed into it or well lord knows. The account made no other edits before or afterward. But the bot gives him a permaban with email and user talk page blocked. Actually kinda harsh, particularly considering that if the bot made a mistake, you can't tell anyone without ban evasion, which means the mods at TOW must instant revert and ignore you. But then again, TOW is stricter than ED and maybe the user merely got a permaban for not signing their post. Here Ryulong blocked someone a month for that. Ritegroic 04:05, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
      • I don't have the energy or the interest to read the bot's code, but my guess would be the presence of the word anus or goatse. A lot of their bots work on a relative point scale for every word added or deleted, so using anus in the context of a normal sentence would be good, but using anus in a 3 word sentence would not be. It seems like a shitty metric to me; then again, Wikipedia is built on a shitty culture. WM 05:27, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
        • goatse as a word is always split up so maybe Kirk Johnson is an auto permaban. Ritegroic 05:38, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
          • If their bots use regular expressions instead of plain text matching, something like:
g(\s*?)o(\s*?)a(\s*?)t(\s*?)s(\s*?)e

could act as a catch-all no matter how much whitespace was used. The trick would be to look at the list of regular expressions the bot considers to be vandalism and have someone familiar with the syntax figure out a bunch of naughty words that don't meet the criteria. WM 15:24, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

  • antiabusebot's source code is only available to "trusted users". oh boy, god knows what that thing will do. I imagine goatse triggered the parameters. but what the hell, some shit like Talk:Shock site would end up being a mine field. you just can't block people for saying goatse or anus... and I've only been pwning bureaucrats like MBisanz, J.delanoy and NawlinWiki for a couple months now, no reason to add me per WP:DENY policy. then again, the code is private. fucking chris g. "Confirm your e-mail address" broken?

It appears that the "Confirm your e-mail address" function doesn't work. I have double-checked that the address I entered exists, I sent a test message to it and received it, and I do not have server-side spam filtering enabled, yet I didn't get any e-mail when I signed up or when I manually requested a confirmation message. They may block mail from the ED domain; I don't have a good way to test that. Could one of the admin-types check the mail system or something? ZA WARUDO 05:54, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

  • I am not sure what happened, but I just tested it on all web servers and the mail functionality along with the "Confirm your e-mail address" function works. Let me know if you are still having trouble. --Ajt 21:18, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
  • I had this issue, and petitioned the Level Bosses for help. Apparently I did it rong, since no one answered me. I ended up creating a new username, and have had no further issues. Then again, at this stage of my ED career, I am very much shit nobody cares about.

MOAR video embedding.

Hey kids,

We can do it we can do it! We can do any of these: bbsports, bliptv, break, broadcaster, comedycentral, clipfish, clipshack, dailymotion, eyespot, funnyordie, gazeta, glumbert, googlevideo, interia, jumpcut, kewego, liveleak, livevideo, metacafe, myspacetv, myvideo, patrz, photobucket, plejada, putfile, revver, rutube, selfcasttv, sevenload, sharkle, shoutfile, spike, stickam, superdeluxe, uncutvideo, veoh, viddler, videojug, vimeo, wrzuta, yahoovideo, youaretv, youtube, youtube2.

Here is the complete description.

In the case of Vimeo, it would be like this:

<video type="vimeo" id="3095077" width="540" height="406" desc="Psychiatrists did 9/11!" frame="true" position="left"/>

Which gives you this:

Psychiatrists did 9/11!

You could also make it smaller, if you are good with math.

Syntax is "slutload". Here is an example:

Also has tons of social bookmarking options like twitter

As you may or may not have noticed, there is a new flash widget on the left side of the screen in the mainspace and underneath images on image pages. This is a cool new applet that our development department just installed. It makes it easier to link people to your favorite articles and images on the site, add to your social bookmarking websites and email without having to leave the article or image you are currently on. The applet supports LiveJournal, Twitter, Digg, Reddit, Slashdot, MySpace, Friendster, Facebook ,Yahoo, iGoogle, AOL Bookmarks, Blogger, Bebo, Orkut,Piczo, Freewebs, Xanga, Vox, Multiply, Gmail, Hotmail, AOL and a number of smaller sites.

Along with this we have added a box with HTML code underneath the image page applet to make it easier for you to paste images onto forums and websites that support HTML. For example: Putting image macros from our extensive collection to reply to a poster. --zaigertalkplx 18:27, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
